What to expect — and exactly what to do — when you are selected for a random test or involved in an accident.

Random Testing
Owner operator random selection is accomplished on a quarterly basis. Any owner operator selected for a random drug or alcohol test will be notified by telephone and/or certified letter. Upon notification of a random test, the owner operator must proceed immediately to the testing location.
Random testing will be done either at the LWD collection facility or at an LWD pre-selected clinic. We make every effort to assign a clinic within a ten-mile radius of the owner operator's home address or where the commercial vehicle is placed.
Post-Accident Testing
LWD offers post-accident testing to any owner operator involved in an accident while operating a commercial vehicle. A DOT post-accident test is required under the accident conditions below. Fees for a DOT post-accident drug and alcohol test are billed separately and must be paid upon receipt of invoice.
Conditions for post-accident testing
Owner operators will be subject to post-accident testing if either of the following conditions is met:
- There is a fatality in connection with the accident.
- The owner operator receives a citation for a moving violation and there are any injuries treated away from the scene, or the commercial vehicle is disabled and towed from the scene.
If you are involved in any of the above conditions in connection with an accident:
- Alcohol test: the owner operator must attempt to obtain an alcohol test within two (2) hours following the accident. If this cannot be done, the test must be conducted within eight (8) hours. If the eight-hour limit cannot be met, you may cease all attempts to be tested.
- Drug test: the owner operator must obtain a drug test within thirty-two (32) hours following the accident.
